Menorrhagia – Painful, heavy periods

Menorrhagia is the medical term for periods with prolonged, heavy period bleeding. Although heavy bleeding is a common issue, most women do not face blood loss severe enough to call it Menorrhagia. With menorrhagia, you wouldn’t be able to go about your routine activities when you’re on your period because of excessive blood loss and cramping. Here is some more information about the disorder:

Symptoms of Menorrhagia:
  • Needing to change your sanitary pad every few hours due to soaking through them
  • Waking up during the night to change your pad
  • Bleeding heavily for longer than a week
  • Restricting daily activities due to heavy menstrual flow
  • Tiredness, fatigue and shortness of breath
Causes of Menorrhagia or heavy menstrual bleeding are:

Menorrhagia can be caused due to a hormonal imbalance, improper functioning of the ovaries, the use if Intrauterine Devices (IUD), medications etc.

Menorrhagia can lead to larger complications for women suffering from it. One of them is anaemia – a deficiency of iron in the body. Besides this, severe pain is experienced during the period.
