Decoding Pre-Menstrual Syndrome

1 Mins read

Around 90% of women experience some symptoms of PMS during their period. While PMS has the unique capability to bond women together, it can also draw them apart from everyone else. PMS is often misconstrued because of the ambiguous symptoms it entails.

Premenstrual syndrome can be defined as an array of symptoms both physical and psychological that occur 1-2 weeks before the period. It usually ceases once your period starts.

The symptoms of PMS can be divided into physical and emotional symptoms:

Physical Symptoms include:

  • Cramps and migraines
  • Sore breasts
  • Acne breakouts
  • Bloating
  • Digestive outbreaks
  • Hot flushes/ Sweats

Emotional Symptoms include:

  • Mood Swings
  • Irritability
  • Poor Sleep
  • Loss of libido
  • Food Cravings
  • Anxiety
  • Confusion
  • Depression

How do you treat PMS?

Unfortunately, there is no such cure for PMS. However, a few lifestyle modifications will help alleviate the period pain and discomfort.

  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Eat a balanced diet
  • Reduce your intake of sugar, salt, caffeine and alcohol
  • Take supplements such as folic acid, vitamin B-6 calcium and magnesium to reduce period cramps and mood swings
  • Sleep at least 8 hours a day to reduce fatigue
  • Incorporate exercise into your routine

When to go see a doctor?

If the mood swings, physical pain does not go away on in course of time and if it starts affecting your daily life, it might be time to go and consult a doctor. The diagnosis is made when a particular symptom is recurrent even in the absence of menses or ovulation.
