Hair care during periods can be a real deal! It is true that the hormonal changes before, during, and after our periods have their impact not just on the skin but also on the hair.
Right from being extremely dry and oily to hair loss, we experience these changes during the menstruation phase of our cycle. These changes usually occur due to the production of oil by the sebaceous gland (called sebum). *
But that doesn’t mean you have to experience bad hair days every month!
Here are 5 tips to ace your hair care routine and bid farewell to bad hair days:
Use mild shampoo and conditioner
Hormonal fluctuations make the scalp and hair oily during periods. Opt for a cleansing shampoo and for minimal conditioner. This will make sure the scalp’s natural oil is intact.
Treat yourself to a hair spa
During the week when you are menstruating, levels of oestrogen are at rock bottom which might make your hair look dull or cause sensitivity of the scalp. This is the perfect time to get a head massage or a relaxing hair spa!
Your hair’s best buddy- oil
Post your period, the level of oestrogen in your body increases and hormones responsible for triggering oil production, testosterone decreases. Reduction in oil can make your scalp dry, therefore it’s the best time to opt for deep conditioning. A relaxing oil massage will give your hair the necessary moisture and also help in controlling hair fall.
Avoid intense scrubbing
During ovulation, 14 days before the menstrual cycle, the oestrogen level multiplies. This is great for your scalp as it enhances the oil levels. Because of the same, eliminate intense scrubbing as it can hurt your scalp and make it dry.
Eat healthy and eliminate stress
Most importantly, focus on a healthy diet filled with nuts and other sources of good fat. Stress can also be a major cause of hair loss.
